Gale needs to be on the ball if he wants to improve

QUEENSLAND Bulls bowling coach Ashley Noffke says Matt Gale must find consistency if he is to go to the next level next season.

The Sunshine Coast Scorchers paceman had his Bulls contract renewed this week for the 2013-14 season.

The 29-year-old made steady advances last season, when he had two Sheffield Shield and three Ryobi Cup appearances and capped his rise with a call-up to the Chairman's XI side against Sri Lanka.

His season was brought to an abrupt halt in February when he seriously injured a knee, robbing him of the chance to play in the Bulls' Sheffield Shield and Ryobi Cup final appearances.

Noffke said Gale's ability to swing the ball was a genuine asset, but he needed to learn to consistently land the ball in the same spot.

"With Matt it's always been based on consistency. On his day he can move the ball and swing it through the air," Noffke said.

"But the challenge for him is to be a bit more consistent spell to spell.

"He's improved a great deal and if he can keep on improving he can be in the mix of our better bowlers."

Gale tore a medial ligament in Queensland's Sheffield Shield loss to Victoria in mid-February but the injury was not expected to hamper his preparation for next season.

After moving to Queensland in 2010-11 in an effort to improve his prospects, Gale has made the most of his chances. Noffke said he had impressed Bulls staff and he still had improvement in him.

"The nucleus of the side hasn't changed and that breeds more success," Noffke said.

"The side did well to win two of the three titles and finish runner-up in the Sheffield Shield final.

"It's a great achievement and there's so much more improvement in the side. There are still guys still learning their craft."
