Gala ball helps Barney
COMMUNITY support is helping local Barney Miller edge ever-closer to walking again.
Barney, who became a paraplegic after a horrific car accident more than 10 years ago, is about to undergo specialised treatment in the United States to help him walk again.
Last Saturday night, the Barney Miller Gala Ball was held to raise much-needed funds to pay for the expensive rehabilitation – and it was a huge success.
“It was an amazing night,” Barney’s partner Kate Southwell said.
“We had 127 people attend and raised $12,106.55. I am so happy with the outcome.”
From the company to the entertainment and the fundraising auction, Kate said it was definitely a night to remember.
“Everyone looked great and we had a great night,” she said.
“There were three auction items left from the night that didn’t reach the reserve price and so we are going to be put them on eBay.
“They were a signed Kelly Slater wetsuit, signed Joel Parkinson surfboard and a Rip Curl Tom Curren replica surfboard signed by Tom Curren, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Jordy Smith, Adrianno De Suza and more.”
The biggest part of the night, she said, was the amazing community spirit and support for Barney and his quest to get back on to his feet.
“We’d really like to thank everyone for their support,” Kate said.
“It’s so nice to be able to go back over (to the US specialist) with the love and support from family, friends and the community behind us.”
