Japanese secret we want to keep to ourselves

Breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. Delicious food. Relaxing hot springs.

Welcome to Fujikawaguchiko - a place that's so good it's been labelled a dream destination.

Don't tell your friends about it though - in fact if you're coming here you're best not to bring anyone with you.

Fujikawaguchiko, in the foothills of Mount Fuji, has been identified as the hottest spot in the world for solo travellers. In fact, 2017 saw an 84 per cent increase in visits from Aussies travelling alone, according to figures from hotel booking site agoda.

Japan has seen phenomenal growth as a destination for Australians in recent years - and it's especially attractive for solo travellers. After all, it's the home of the capsule hotel and the sushi bar.

Agoda says in 2017, bookings to Japan overall were up 40 per cent among Australian solo travellers.

"With food and accommodation options for every budget, hospitable locals, and diverse experiences on offer, Japan is the perfect solo travel destination," says agoda's global director for brand and communications, Andrew Edwards.

"In recent years, we've seen the rising popularity of capsule hotels catering for solo travellers who are wanting a cheap and easy way to travel around Japan solo."

Other Japanese cities attracting a significant increase in solo travellers include Osaka and Sapporo (both up 65 per cent in 2017), Kyoto (up 55 per cent), Hiroshima (up 50 per cent), Hakone (up 48 per cent) and Tokyo (up 43 per cent).

Overall, Aussie solo travel has grown by 14 per cent since 2015, the agoda analysis found.

Other growing solo travel international destinations include: China (up 15 per cent in 2017), Indonesia (up 13 per cent) and the Philippines (up 12 per cent).
