'Fruity melon' rave party shut down by cops

MORE than 1000 drum and bass fans were expected to descend on Upper Orara at the weekend for what was meant to be an all-night rave party.

Named the "Fruity Melon Festival", the event was due to run into the early hours of Sunday morning, but was instead shut down by police after attracting complaints.

Held on private property on Dairyville Rd, attendees were told to leave the site after a noise abatement direction was issued by police.

"Organisers of these parties disregard the safety of the community and the people in attendance," Coffs Clarence Crime Manager Detective Inspector Darren Jameson said.

"These events are centred around excessive alcohol and drug use, and it is only a matter of time before we lose a young life."

Earlier on Saturday night, a 22-year-old Lismore man was arrested and charged with the supply and possession of large quantities of illicit drugs that were allegedly discovered in a Toyota Tarago van.

The vehicle had been carrying six people who were allegedly on their way to the Fruity Melon Festival.

Police allegedly located 97 ecstasy tables inside the vehicle as well as two bottles of LSD liquid, cannabis, and an unknown crystalline substance, believed to be an illicit substance.

A further 93 MDMA capsules and a small amount of cannabis were also allegedly located inside a locked safe.

The drugs were enough to supply around 200-400 street deals.

The 22-year-old appeared before the Coffs Harbour Local Court on Monday where proceedings were adjourned to August 25. Bail was refused.
