From the Daily Mercury Editor’s Desk
Dear valued subscribers,
How on earth has another month passed so quickly? I cannot believe it's already August.
On the flip side, can 2020 hurry up and end already?
Somewhat ironically we published a front page on New Year's Day with the headline "2020 vision" but none of us could have predicted the year that lie ahead.
We had no idea.
With my ailing parents in Victoria and my sister working as a nurse down there, I just hope we get a positive outcome to all this COVID business.
Mum just had a COVID test yesterday after experiencing severe shortness of breath. She has had some underlying health issues recently so I hope it's not COVID and just further complications that will resolve.
It really is a nasty disease and I don't want to face the prospect of it striking my own family two states away.
You've probably seen my rant on the subject but I really wish the selfish, entitled, irresponsible people trying to cross our borders up here copped some jail time or at least a higher penalty for their behaviour too.
We need to eradicate this disease until we get a vaccine.
I'm pretty pleased they have opened a drive-through testing clinic in Mackay though, better to be safe than sorry.
Lots of you have stuck those bud things up your noses and I don't envy you but I thank you.
If you've had the test here in Mackay, how long is it taking to turn the test around and get results?
During all this, our teachers have been doing an amazing job keeping our kids on track through remote learning during COVID and since.
So we asked you to nominate Mackay's favourite teachers so we can give them the praise they deserve. You can still lodge your vote in our poll.
Today we had another round of the Aaron Payne Cup (schoolboys rugby if you're not familiar) and the numbers watching our livestreamed games from Townsville, Mackay and Rocky was phenomenal.
Our audience for those keeps growing every week.
If you missed the games, you can watch the full replays here:
Myself and my team have spoken to many of you over the past few weeks as we navigate the new digital world.
