Sydney Male Choir brings music to Sawtell

SYDNEY Male Choir music director Dr Houston Dunleavy says his men will deliver "a magnificent community extravaganza" when they come to town to sing at Sawtell RSL.

Dr Dunleavy said the choir, which celebrated its 100th anniversary with a spectacular concert at Sydney Town Hall in 2013, will perform in Sawtell as part of its 2015 Northern NSW Tour.

"The men are proud of their record in bringing fine music to country centres ever since the choir began life as Petersham Glee Club," he said. "As well as singing at retirement villages, churches and town halls across Sydney and suburbs, they travel to outlying districts and regional centres to share their songs with local communities.

"For example, a few years ago the choir undertook a Mates Across the Divide tour of the drought-stricken Far West that saw people drive hundreds of miles to enjoy the concerts.

"On this tour we're taking our music firstly to Cessnock, then on to Gunnedah, Tamworth, Narrabri, Tenterfield, Sawtell, Port Macquarie and Forster."

In keeping with its commitment to serving the community, the choir has sung at the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place every year since 1932.

Following an invitation from the Federal Government, the choir marked its 100th anniversary by joining with Australian schoolchildren to celebrate Anzac Day in a nationally-televised service at the Australian War Memorial at Villers-Brettoneux on the Somme.

"That trip also enabled us to sing at the Arc de Triomphe and L'eglise de la Madeleine in Paris before going on to represent Australia at an International Choral Festival in Cornwall," Dr Dunleavy said.

"We'll entertain our audiences with a wonderful range of music - from Gershwin classics to a tribute to Queen and from a Beatles medley to Pink Floyd's On the Turning Away.

"All-time favourites will include Georgia on My Mind, Siddown You're Rockin' the Boat, Danny Boy and a choral version of American Trilogy, which was originally arranged for Elvis Presley."
