Frillneck Fillies go undefeated in three consecutive matches
RUGBY UNION: The St George Frillneck Fillies travelled to their first ever Sevens carnival at Warwick with high spirits and energy to burn.
The Fillies played three consecutive matches and remained undefeated against the Toowoomba Rangers, USQ and the Warwick Water Rats on Saturday.
The Filles scored a remarkable total of 92 points over the day and conceded only 12. Coach Angus Jamieson said a massive congratulations must go out to the Frillneck Fillies for the way they conducted themselves during their first ever carnival.
"The true Frillneck spirit was shown by every player and as a team they have shaken the competition up already,” Jamieson said.
"The usual feeling of nervousness was amongst the team as this was the girls first proper carnival.
"However, from the kick off it showed that the Fillies meant business.”
Jamieson said a quick first try scored by Alice Rathie was the start of the momentum swing towards that every other team struggled to keep up with.
The Fillies recorded their first win in the Downs competition smashing USQ 31-0.
"A solid pre-season with coach Simon Lane pushing the girls, saw the ladies in red come out with a renewed energy in their second game up against Toowoomba Rangers,” Jamieson said.
"Some early strong running from Jess Jackson and Tess Worboys saw the Fillies gain early dominance over the Rangers team and winning the game 41 - 0.
In the final outing for the day, the two undefeated teams of St George and Warwick came head to head in what was a highly anticipated match between evenly matched sides.
But it was not long before the Fillies crossed the white line to rack up the first points of the match and from there the girls never looked back, coming home victors 22-12 and taking out the Sevens carnival.
