Free phone calls during Christmas period
PAY phones might not be as popular as they used to be, but for those who can't afford a mobile phone, they can be a lifeline.
Which is why from Christmas Eve until December 28, all Telstra pay phones will offer free calls around the country.
The offer is limited to local, national and mobile calls, but premium numbers such as 13, 19 and 12 will continue to be charged at regular rates.
There are about 53 pay phones around Mackay, stretching from Bakers Creek in the south, Glenella in the west, and up to Bucasia in the north.
Across Australia Telstra operates about 16,800 pay phones under a universal service obligation, which ensures a standard telephone service is "reasonably accessible" to all people in Australia.
