Four teams battling for three finals spots

RUGBY: One thing is certain heading into the final round of the Wagners Risdon Cup A-grade season.

Rangers will play finals football – the other three finals spots remain up for grabs.

Three points separate Bears (14) in second and fifth placed Roma (11) with the top four to line-up in next weekend’s knockout semi-finals.

Bears host Roma this weekend and USQ will welcome Condamine to Toowoomba.

“Considering the circumstances, the ongoing drought, last year’s bushfires and now COVID it’s been an incredible season,” Downs Rugby general manager Matt Hammond said.

“The quality of rugby has been fantastic and now we have what you might call a perfect storm with Rangers already qualified for finals and the other four teams still in with a shot.

“Players like Tom Vinson and Mack Mason have really added to the quality of the competition and some of the league boys who have come across are playing well.

“And overall I think all teams in general have really lifted the general standard – you only have to look at the scrums for an example of that.

“It’s a fantastic end to the regular season and I think the finals will be just as exciting.”

The simplest path to the finals is victory in the last round with four points awarded to winning teams.

There are however other factors that could come in to play and determine a team’s finals fate.

A bonus point is awarded to a team if they win by three clear tries or lose by less than seven points.

Points differential could also be factor with Dalby falling short last year after missing a kick at the siren.

LADDER: Rangers (35 points, +142), Bears (14, -12), Condamine (14, -24), USQ (12, -34), Roma (11, -72).

MATCH DAY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19: USQ vs Condamine at USQ, 3pm. Bears vs Roma at Heritage Oval, 3pm.
