Greens candidate for Coffs Harbour, Cr Rodney Degens, will speak at tonight’s rail forum at the Cavanbah Centre.

Forum is on track

COFFS Rail Forum will be held at 6pm tonight at the Cavanbah Centre in Harbour Dr.

The forum will discuss the proposed Macksville to Glenreagh passenger service using the main North Coast rail line

Greens candidate for the state seat of Coffs Harbour, Coffs Harbour City councillor Rodney Degens and guests will be sharing their vision of the future of this region in terms of transport, town planning, development, business, urban design and light rail.

Cr Degens said the forum would be an update on local rail transport matters, especially concerning passenger rail, because a lot had happened since the last rail forum two years ago, which looked mainly at rail freight but also considered passenger services.

He said a lot had also happened in terms of recommendations passed by Coffs Harbour City Council concerning rail proposals in the last term of council and he would like to inform the electorate about what had happened.

Cr Degens will also be mentioning the new Coffs Harbour local environment plan and the problems it poses for a future rail passenger service.

Railways have become the poor relation in terms of transport of people and goods, in spite of their demonstrated capability to move large volumes across long distances safely.

Scarcity of services and car convenience has kept rail off the agenda for short trips for country people.

Entry to the forum is a gold coin donation to cover the cost of hall hire and everyone is invited to come along and share their ideas.
