Former AFL star Ben Cousins in hospital

FORMER AFL star Ben Cousins was hospitalised after an incident on the Canning Hwy in Perth late on Sunday.

The one-time West Coast Eagles captain was found acting erratically on the major motorway near Como.

Traffic had to be diverted for most of the afternoon as police tried to calm him down.

Local media reports said he was found directing traffic.

He was in hospital late on Monday with police telling reporters he was being treated for a mental health issue.

"We were standing right there and one metre in front of us a red motorbike stopped and he ripped him off," a woman was reported as saying by Yahoo News.

"He (Cousins) was trying to hitchhike. The bike went down and he ran into the bushes here. He was fried."
