Forget Me Not busy saving Nepalese children

THE Forget Me Not Children's Home has been hard at work reuniting children with their families after the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal in April.

President Andrea Nave said the children's home had rescued 10 children from an illegal orphanage and six of those children had been reunited with their families.

Ms Nave said the man who had set up the orphanage was facing charges for the trafficking of children, with the kids living in appalling conditions and one girl having contracted tuberculosis.

The children ranged in age from four to nine years old.

Ms Nave said about 300 children had lost both parents after the earthquake, while about 100 children had lost one parent.

She said it was important to keep track of the numbers in order to fight against pop up orphanages, which were claiming thousands of children had been left orphans after the earthquake.

"We've got to keep the numbers realistic," she said.

Ms Nave said while the situation in Nepal had dropped off the radar somewhat, donations are still trickling in for the organisation.

More than $149,000 has been raised to help the Forget Me Children's Home carry out work supporting the girls already in their care and other children in need of assistance after the earthquake.

Ms Nave said there had been an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale yesterday morning, proving that the crisis in Nepal was far from over.

"As people forget about Nepal, Forget Me Not doesn't," Ms Nave said.
