Football coach now on beach

FOOTBALL fans may recognise a familiar face patrolling local beaches.

Former elite footballer and international coach Gary Phillips is back on the Coffs Coast, serving as a temporary lifeguard.

Gary and his family have returned home to Sawtell after nearly 30 years of living all over Australia and overseas.

The former midfielder and schoolboy international spent more than a decade with Sydney Olympic in the National Soccer League before joining the Brisbane Strikers.

After hanging up the boots in 1996/97, he switched to coaching and worked with the Tongan national side and Sydney Olympic.

Most recently, Gary coached the Malaysian side Sabah FA in Borneo where he guided the team to Super League promotion in just seven months.

But after constant moves, the Phillips family has returned home to give Boston, 11, and Heilala, 9, the chance to put down some roots.
