Football club has their sights on grand final already

FOOTBALL: ONE Mackay club has made a super early start to their pre-season training by taking part in a pre-season game at the weekend.

West United FC and Dolphins FC played a pre-season game in hopes of getting an early gauge for their upcoming seasons.

"Technically since this year's season ended we haven't really been doing much,” West coach Andrew Payne said.

"Pre-season doesn't start for most teams until after new years. However, we host a game amongst ourselves every Thursday at 5pm.

"We decided to host this match against Dolphins just to get a run around and see where the team is at.”

Payne hopes to arrange a few more early pre-season games for his side.

"We have our eyes on making the grand final next season,” he said.

"I hope this gives us the edge on some of the other sides in town.”

Defensively West struggled with Dolphins finding the back of the net seven times.

"This will be something we need to work on and fix,” he said.

"The fact that we know this is an area we need to improve this early is a benefit for us.”
