Foot bridge is back in action

WOOPI residents are pleased a popular walk bridge linking Lake Rd and Melaleuca Ave has been repaired.

Coffs Harbour City Council said the bridge was repaired last week and it took two days.

Residents Ben Holmes and Garry Fell said the bridge is a favourite with residents, the broader community and tourists because it creates easy access between residential areas and the village centre.

"Everybody uses it - the elderly, the disabled and kids use it. We're glad it's back open," Ben said.

Garry said he and Ben, both avid fishermen, were keen to finally be able to drop a line at one of their favourite fishing spots.

"We do a lot of fishing there. Hopefully we can go on a night later this week," he said

The council had repaired extensive damage to the posts and rails after two separate vandalism incidents.

The bridge was closed after the third incident on October 21 because council staff needed to wait for a new delivery of hardwood to repair the bridge.

During that time, those needing to access Melaleuca Ave, Woolgoolga Beach or the village centre had to make a 3km detour via Solitary Islands Way, Market and Beach Sts.

The council urges residents to report any vandalism attacks by phoning 6648 4000.
