BOOK REVIEW: Hamlet’s Ophelia comes alive on the page

FOLLOWING on from her brilliant interpretation of Juliet Capulet, Children's Laureate Jackie French has now re-imagined Hamlet's Ophelia.

French is a firm believer that the Bard's words are best understood when experienced on the stage rather that in the classroom.

"Hamlet is perhaps the most perfect of black comedies, but unless you are used to the language, it doesn't read like that," she said.

"I suspect Shakespeare would have been more horrified by his plays being studied in books, than with the liberties I've taken with the plot and script."
