'Flawed' process misses many newly affected residents

I NOTE with interest that in a full-page advertisement in the Noosa News the Sunshine Coast Council includes a statement from the Queensland Coordinator-General in 2016 that "Sunshine Coast Council has taken all reasonable steps to inform the community about the airport expansion, prior to and during the EIS process”.

This is hardly surprising as in 2016, on the face of it, in terms of their submission, Sunshine Coast Council did look as though they had done an impressive amount of consultation.

The problem is that they focused more of their efforts on areas where there were no residents affected by the new flight paths and basically little effort on the newly affected residents in the Noosa Shire Council area.

It was only in the wake of the Airservices Australian consultation debacle earlier this year, with community groups letter dropping to advise residents of the consultation, that the residents of the affected areas in both the Sunshine Coast Council region and Noosa Council region became aware of the situation.

The conclusion that the process was flawed is supported by breaking down the figures and looking at the areas where the consultations took place - something that the Auditor-General would need to do if he were to pick up the inadequacy of the consultation.

It would appear to me that the Sunshine Coast Council and Airservices Australia have regarded the community consultation in relation to the environmental impact statement and to the proposed new flight paths as a "tick the boxes” exercise.
