Man drink drives with kids in car

IT is one of the most staggering drink-driving episodes ever seen on the Coffs Coast.

A father of three has been caught with a blood alcohol reading five times over the limit – while allegedly driving with his children in the car.

The man allegedly told police he had only consumed two glasses of wine before driving.

Officers were patrolling the streets of Nambucca Heads at 5pm, Thursday, when they became suspicious about the behaviour of a man driving a Ford Falcon station wagon and decided to investigate.

They pulled over the Nambucca Heads 55-year-old in Liston Street and when they approached him, they discovered a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and that he was intoxicated.

Police then saw the man’s three children in the car.

A girl, 11, was in the front seat and two boys aged six and eight were seated in the back.

The kids were placed in the care of a relative after the man returned a positive roadside breath test.

He was arrested and taken to Nambucca Heads Police Station where he returned a blood alcohol reading of .245 in a breath analysis, almost five times the legal limit of .05.

The man’s licence was suspended on the spot and he was charged with high-range prescribed concentration of alcohol (PCA).

He was released on conditional bail and ordered to appear in Macksville Local Court on June 15.
