Ingleby preparing to defend world title
RIPPING up the surf in South-East Asia, home-grown world champion long boarder, Harley Ingleby, will be battling it out against the world's best long boarders to retain his world champion title.
We caught up with Harley to talk all things surfing, his career and why the local break is always best.
Do you think you have a strong chance at retaining your ASP world Long board champion title this year? Is there some stiff competition this year?
I definitely have a chance and I'm feeling good right now with some great new boards but being a 1 event world title there is definitely a lot of luck involved. It only takes one bad heat with slow waves and your year is over. Especially with the level of guys I know will be at the event this year! The boys don't make to many mistakes when they get the opportunity. Hopefully this year the surfers can work with WSL to get more events on the schedule!
Does the WSL Taiwan Open of Surfing serve as a bit of a warm up for worlds early next month in China?
Yes i'm over in Taiwan right now for the Taiwan Open of Surfing. It's the first Australasian Longboard QS for the 2016 calendar. I'm going to have a paddle in the Shortboard WQS 1500 for a change also. It should be a perfect warm up for China! I haven't surfed any big heats for 6 months or so, so it should be fun!
Since bursting onto the scene at the World Longboarding Tour in 2006, did you expect your career to sky-rocket the way it has?
I wouldn't say I expected it to go so well but right from the start I definitely had some self belief that I could make it! I think you have to. It was definitely a shock to get a 3rd at the ASP world championships my first real year at having a go.
What's can we expect to see from you in the next year? Any big competitions or surfing projects in the works?
Fingers crossed a couple of new WLT events next year but i'm actually hoping to get on board a few trips with some of my best mates who just brought a 90 odd year old yacht in Malta and plan to sail it home to OZ via the Canaries, Caribbean, Pacific Islands or wherever the wind takes them. They plan to film and document the whole trip. Its a once in a lifetime kind of trip and i'm so keen to be a part of it as much as possible. It's very early days but will probably be broadcast on their website thewetwayhome.com if you want to keep tabs on it.
Where's your favourite place to surf?
Home (Emerald Beach) on its day. I've had some incredible surfs all over the world but there's something about home on the best days that really stick out. Your generally just out with mates on those days. Indonesia is pretty special as well!
