First win for Woolgoolga

THE Woolgoolga RSL Golf Club has claimed its first Division 1 pennant.

Facing Grafton in last weekend’s final at the picturesque Nambucca Heads course, Woolgoolga took no heed of their ‘underdog’ tag and recorded a memorable come-from-behind victory against the team that had been dominant all year and won the pennant on a number of occasions in the past.

Grafton enjoyed the best of the early play, leading 3-up in two matches and all-square in another.

This meant that Woolgoolga had plenty of work to do on the back nine but the team slowly started to claw its way back into the contest.

Grant Skinner who was playing as Woolgoolga’s number one player completely overpowered his opponent to comfortably win his match 6 and 5. Skinner produced a great display of precision golf and had carded roughly 5-under by the time his match was finished.

Logan Toms was next to post a victory with a gritty 3 and 2 win, leaving Woolgoolga only one more match to secure the competition.

Woolgoolga need not have worried though. Gary Bolton squared his match while Aaron Hart with a score of 2 and 1 and Cheyne Clarke after 19 holes both posted gutsy comeback wins to create history for the small coastal club landing their first Division 1 Pennant.

Remarkably, the first four players for Woolgoolga all play off scratch or better which is an unbelievable amount of low markers for a little club that now has a big reputation.

The Woolgoolga team was ably assisted throughout the year by Don Penson, Shane Graham, John Thorn, Mark Hutchinson and Daniel Mollis.

Talk has already turned to how they will defend the title in 2011.
