First look at Independence Day sequel Resurgence

IT LOOKS like Liam Hemsworth will be the new hero replacing Will Smith in the long-awaited Independence Day sequel Resurgence.

The Aussie actor appears alongside returning star Jeff Goldblum in the film's first trailer, released today.

The relinquished aliens are back with bigger ships in an attempt to conquer Earth once and for all.

Hemsworth isn't the only Aussie in the cast. Young actor Garrett Wareing (Boychoir) also stars as a character named Bobby.

Bill Pullman also returns as do Vivica A Fox and Judd Hirsch, but original star Will Smith is noticeably absent.

A special website has been created by 20th Century Fox to explain the death of Smith's character in the intervening years because of a malfunction during a piloting test of an alien hybrid fighter.

Earlier this year Game of Thrones' Deobia Oparei told APN the movie will stand on its own to entertain cinema-goers who haven't seen the first film.

"It was an awesome experience to work with Roland Emmerich, the director, who really founded that genre of disaster movies. Standing alone it's a really good movie," he said.

"I play an Oxford educated African warlord who gets to go into space with Jeff Goldblum."

Independence Day: Resurgence opens on June 23, 2016.
