Firebirds need consistency to be Giant killers

NETBALL: Queensland Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke says her team needs to find some consistency as it prepares for a crucial clash with the ladder-leading Giants at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday.

Queensland came within two points of a fourth-quarter lead against the Sunshine Coast Lightning last Sunday before collapsing to a 60-49 defeat at USC Stadium.

Jencke said she was pleased with some of the Firebirds' play but there was certainly room for improvement.

"We're having some good patches but aren't able to find consistency for four quarters," she said.

"I'm very pleased with some of the work the defenders are doing and everyone is working really hard.

"We just need to make sure that is being transferred into effective outputs on the court.

"Our focal point in coming up against the Giants is valuing possession of the ball, making sure we have multiple options for the ball-carrier and being resilient when the body comes on us.

"They'll come out strong and contest every ball. If we give one option, they'll come through and take it.

"We need to do more work off the ball to be competitive against them."

If the Firebirds win it will be the side's first success over a team in the top four in the inaugural Super Netball season.

The Firebirds will welcome back South African international Erin Burger to the line-up this week, allowing Australian international Caitlyn Nevins to move back to her preferred position of wing attack.

In the goal circle Gretel Tippett will take on ex-Firebird Bec Bulley, who returned to elite netball this year after winning a premiership with Queensland in 2015.
