Woman fined $422 for illegal park

SPENDING a penny has cost Lisa Davis dearly.

After yet another trip to hospital from Woolgoolga with her injured son, she pulled into a disabled car park because nine-year-old Heath needed to go to the toilet.

Heath had broken his arm in December last year and was on the final stretch after several operations to repair the damage.

“He was still in a lot of pain,” she said.

It was raining cats and dogs when Mrs Davis and Heath drove into an undercover disabled car park near the Big W doors in Vernon Street. The pair jumped out of the car and bolted for the toilets in Palms Shopping Centre.

Mother and son returned shortly afterwards to find a $422 fine for parking without a permit.

Mrs Davis is outraged.

“The fine is out of proportion with the offence,” she said.

Since February, Mrs Davis has been shunted around Government departments in her fight to get the fine overturned.

“I was told by Council to write a letter and supply the medical records. I thought that would have been enough to be let off.”

But the State Debt Recovery Office said the fine still stands.

The only course of action left now for Mrs Davis is to either pay up or go to the expense of hiring a lawyer and taking her case to court where she risks having to pay more than $2000 if she loses.
