Finals days to 'play' Rent
IT MAY have had a record 12-year run on Broadway but if you want to see the local production of Rent presented by the Coffs Harbour Musical Comedy Company you only have until Sunday.
On stage at the Jetty Memorial Theatre and set in the artistic community of the East Village of New York in the late 1980s, the Pulitzer prize-winning story of Rent is loosely based on the classic opera, La Boheme.
"Rent tracks the life of a group of assorted friends and the journey they go on, it's a contemporary story dealing with relationships, tragedy and triumph," Maureen Burgess, the director, said.
"There is a cast of 19 singers performing 43 musical numbers, the vocal arrangements are outstanding, I absolutely love the music; it has many influences from New Orleans to the power ballads of the '80s and complementing the singers is a full band including guitars, drums, brass, strings and keyboards.
"The amount of time this cast has put in and the amount of trust, dedication and commitment they have shown really translates into the performances. We have quite a few making their stage musical debuts and it's such a diverse cast from 'lady boys' to seniors, first timers to old hands.
"Jonathon Larson's Rent gives people something to think about, we have had people weeping at the end because they are so moved. It is one of the most satisfying productions I've been involved in and the feedback from audiences has been so rewarding."
The final curtain goes down on this production on Sunday at 2pm.
