Fijian flyers to give SCU Marlins ‘bamboozle’ factor
THE BEAUTY of rugby union is that a player can travel to any part of the globe and find somewhere to pick up a game.
That's how Southern Cross University coach Dave Nicol was able to capture the attention of five visiting touch footballers from Fiji and give them the opportunity of sharing an historic moment with his team.
Peni (Ben) Tulsinu, Clayborn Ledua, Petueli Taufaga, Johanson (Keith) Nauluvula and Rusiate (Rush) Uluimoala were visiting the Coffs Coast for the World Touch Cup and staying at the home of rugby identity Fred Miller.
"As soon as Fred discovered they played rugby, he rang me chasing a game," Nicol said.
"They are only here for five weeks but already have been thrilled by being part of our first ever win over Coffs Harbour.
"If our luck holds, I'm hoping they'll go out there today and bamboozle the Port Pirates when they call at Marlins Park."
While the Pacific Islands visitors were a talking point against the Snappers, Nicol put credit for the victory in the hands of his hard-working forward pack.
"When we were smashed by Vikings in the first game, I got them together at training and laid it all on the line," he revealed.
"I put it to them we needed total commitment or we may as well start planning for the off-season now.
"So, how proud do you think I was to watch them get stuck into Coffs right from the start?
"They bent their backs, got the heads down and worked and worked and worked for that win.
"However, we've still got a long way to go."
Marlins scored a shock win over Pirates in 2013 but had them done like a dinner in the last home game of 2014 before allowing a miracle escape.
"An 80-minute effort can do it for us again today," Nicol added.
