Fighter believes his biggest battle is with himself

MUAY THAI:

Underground Fight and Fitness's Tyson Faulkner will headline Underground Showdown Two on April 2.

Faulkner will be facing an experienced opponent in Jacob Breen, a veteran of about 18 fights in a career that's spanned ... years.

"He will be a tough match-up but I am just treating it like another fight," Faulkner said.

"I'm not over-thinking it. At the end of the day the real battle is with myself. It doesn't matter who is across from me."

Faulkner has been taking a break since his last fight, earlier this year.

"I'm back into training now. I had to take some time to let some injuries heal," he said.

"My training is different for each fight. (I'm) always trying a new approach and new things."

The New Zealand-born fighter enjoys fighting in front of a home crowd in Mackay.

"You feel really good fighting at home in front of people you know," he said.

"It is a lot of fun and you get the extra boost in the fight when you need it."

Faulkner also will be closely watching some of his teammates' fights on the night.

"It will be good to see how they take it," he said.

"Everyone is on their own journey and they will walk out a new and better person."

Underground Fight and Fitness owner Amanda Hutchinson believes Faulkner is an inspiration.

"Our other fighters and members look up to Tyson and his accomplishments motivate them to work harder," she said.

Faulkner hopes this event will further grow the sport in the region.

"Hopefully it brings new people and we can continue to get a good reputation in the community," he said.

"For me it comes down to you have to practise what you preach, so I train and help others but then work hard to also do well so they can see that."

Underground Showdown Two will feature 16 fights showcasing fighters of various abilities.

The event will be held at the Underground Fight and Fitness gym on Prospect St in South Mackay.

Doors will open at 5pm with the first fight taking place at 6pm.
