'FIFO crims' swooping on Coast property as crime spikes

DETECTIVES believe a group of out-of-towners is behind a massive spike in thefts across the Sunshine Coast over the past week.

Crime Services Detective Acting Inspector Daren Edwards said "crooks coming up from other districts" are believed to be responsible for the boom in break-ins.

Almost 50 break-ins were recorded across the Coast over the past week, a jump from the usual 30-odd incidents a week.

A further 6-7 break-ins were recorded over 24 hours in Noosa, and Det Actg Insp Edwards said the message about locking up homes and vehicles was still not sinking in.

In the early hours of Sunday morning three men stole a white BMW X5 (registration 048-WVB) and a black Toyota Yaris hatch (registration 754-RIM) from The Passage, Pelican Waters.

Det Actg Insp Edwards said the offenders stole two sets of car keys from the kitchen bench of the Pelican Waters home, before stealing the two vehicles which were locked and parked in the driveway.

He said a laptop and sunglasses were also stolen, and information received indicated the trio had been disturbed during another break-in in the middle of the day at Narangba, after the BMW was sighted.

Public assistance was being sought to identify the three men.

Det Actg Insp Edwards said ongoing issues were that people were not garaging vehicles, leaving back doors unlocked and not securing house and car keys in the property, often leaving them in plain sight.

"I just don't get it (the lax approach to security)," he said.

He said thieves were targeting affluent areas of the Sunshine Coast, as well as some new estates.
