Fazio undone by porn bill

THE future of Amanda Fazio remains uncertain, two days after defying her party.

The Tweed Labor Duty MLC and president of the New South Wales upper house was suspended by the Australian Labor Party on Wednesday for voting against party lines on a bill related to the distribution of pornography.

Ms Fazio has released only one short statement since the incident.

“I am not commenting on this matter,” the statement read. “I accept that I have broken the rules of the party and will abide by the decision of the party.”

When contacted by the Tweed Daily News yesterday her office said she would not speak to media, nor had plans to release any further statements.

Ms Fazio had no visits to the Tweed scheduled for November.

On Tuesday night, Ms Fazio joined four Greens MPs seeking to amend the Classification (Publications, Films And Computer Games) Enforcement Amendment Bill, breaching the party rule that members must vote along party lines.

The legislation, which passed through the upper house without amendment, gives police the power to classify material sold in adult shops.

The new laws mean that once police have classified material as x-rated, which is banned for sale in New South Wales, shop owners will have to pay for the Classification Board to reclassify the material to avoid prosecution.

On Wednesday, the New South Wales Parliamentary Labor Party caucus was told Ms Fazio’s membership of the ALP had been suspended pending a hearing of the party’s disputes committee.
