POLICE are continuing their inquiries into a fatal head-on smash on the Pacific Highway.
At 1.25pm on Sunday, a northbound motorbike slammed head-on into an oncoming semi-trailer about 1km north of Kempsey.
The rider fell from his machine and died at the scene, police said.
The semi, laden with sugar, was being driven by a Lismore man, 57. His heavy vehicle left the road and shuddered to a halt in a paddock.
The driver escaped injury.
Emergency crews dashed to the scene and the road was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene.
The male motorbike rider is yet to be formally identified but it is believed he is from the Sydney area.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
MOTORISTS narrowly escaped injury in a smash near Dorrigo on Sunday afternoon.
Police said a westbound white Mazda was negotiating a left-hand bend on Armidale Road at Billys Creek when the driver saw an oncoming semi-trailer.
The car driver braked to avoid a collision but instead slid into the trailer.
