Nicole Kidman and Geoffrey Rush lead the Aussie charge at the 69th annual awards.

Kidman is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her acclaimed portrayal of abused wife Celeste Wright in Big Little Lies.

The seven-part drama, co-executive produced by Kidman from the novel by Aussie author Liane Moriarty, has been nominated for a whopping 14 Emmys including Outstanding Limited Series.

Industry scribes are now talking of a "Kidman-aissance" after rave reviews for movie Lion, in which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, The Beguiled and miniseries Top of the Lake: China Girl.

"Big Little Lies is painful to watch," Kidman said. "It's deeply uncomfortable and it is complicated, which is what I wanted to make.

"The role entered my psyche in a way that I didn't want it to, but it just did. I was lucky that I have Keith (Urban), who I could go home to and who is very solid."

Kidman's category has been described as one of the most brilliantly talented in television history. Kidman is up against Big Little Lies co-star Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon for Feud: Bette and Joan, Carrie Coon for Fargo and Felicity Huffman for American Crime.

Geoffrey Rush is up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of Albert Einstein in Genius.

The Aussie star will face off against Robert De Niro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, John Turturro and Riz Ahmed in what promises to be another nailbiting category.

"We know he was obsessed with theoretical physics but he could have reporters laughing within 30 seconds," Rush said. "I see a lot of Harpo Marx and Groucho Marx in him as well as being a scientist."

The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards air today at 10am on Fox8. Stephen Colbert hosts.
