Fashionistas gear up for Ladies Oaks Day at Caloundra

LADIES, open those wardrobes for the brightest day of the Sunshine Coast racing calendar.

This Friday is the Hot 91 Ladies Oaks Day at Corbould Park, one of the most fashionable days of the year for racing lovers and fashionistas.

Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival director Jacinta Richmond said that while Derby Day was all black and white, Oaks Day was about “colour and personal flair”.

Ms Richmond said there were rules to be followed, such as wearing a headpiece, preferably matched with shoes and bag, sensible shoes, lace gloves, and ensuring hemlines were not too far above the knee, but sheer stockings on bare legs was one rule that could be bent on the Coast.

The hot tips for trackside dressing this year from Lowes, Spendless Shoes, and LensPro, at Morayfield Shopping Centre, which is sponsoring the Fashions on the Field event, are suits in colours and florals for men, shoes in faux suede with block heels, and oversized sunglasses, Wayfarers and aviators – perhaps to tone down the brights.

Sunshine Coast Turf Club chief executive officer Mick Sullivan said the day was one of the most popular on the calendar, with many corporate functions already booked.

“The formula of combining thoroughbred racing and high profile live performances on the main stage continues to be successful,” Mr Sullivan said.

“Through sourcing high profile Australian acts, we believe that admission of $25 per person still represents great value for money.”

The entertainment at this year’s event will include the Australian duo Yolanda Be Cool, responsible for the 2010 Aria nominated We Speak No Americano as well as last year’s Sugar Man, an edit of the Rodriguez song.

And while racegoers worry about what to wear, the male revue group, the Sydney Hotshots, will put the focus on what to take off.

Gates at Corbould Park will open at 10.30am this Friday.

Admission is $25 adults and $20 concession, with a percentage of the gate takings going towards STEPS Charity, which promotes inclusiveness and opportunities for people in the community who need a helping hand.

Free buses will run from Noosa south to to the racecourse and back in the afternoon.
