Fanfare for youth centre opening

THE youth of Bellingen Shire now have their very own place to call home.

The $2 million federally funded Bellingen Shire Youth Centre "the Hub" was officially opened yesterday.

Bellingen Shire Council was one of only five grant recipients throughout Australia to be funded through the Jobs Fund Program, an initiative to support the development of the arts, business and community centres for young Australians.

The Bellingen Shire Youth Centre was the first of the five projects to open and there was a lot of excitement and positive energy around Tuesday's event.

Bellingen Shire Council Mayor Mark Troy officiated at the opening.

Bellingen Shire Council general manager Liz Jeremy said the event was a great opportunity to not only celebrate the new facility but to bring key people together.

"The Youth Centre is the facility but it's the social infrastructure that makes things happen," Ms Jeremy said.

"We are very fortunate to have received the grant to build such a wonderful facility that will provide support, education, training and other recreational activities for our young people as they transition into adults."
