BLUES FOREVER: Qld family paints house ahead of Origin
BRIGHTON resident Daryl Hillard hopes showing his true colours will inspire New South Wales to a three-nil victory in this year's State of Origin series which kicks off this Wednesday (May 31).
The die-hard NSW fan has made a stand and, in an act of defiance against his neighbours and the whole of Queensland, has painted his house blue.
"I'm hoping for a three-nil victory for NSW starting with the first game in the series," Mr Hillard said.
But not everyone in the family feels the same way.
"We've left the mailbox maroon for my daughter who supports Queensland," Mr Hillard said.
"I've been pushing Olivia to turn blue but she's a Queenslander born and bred."
The lone maroon Olivia Hillard Harrison said living in a blue house full of Blues supporters was not great but it wouldn't make her change sides any time soon.
NSW rugby league great Michael O'Connor turned up on Monday to apply the finishing touches on the paint job to the house and to provide Mr Hillard with some moral support.
"I'm the only ex-NSW player living this side of the border so I thought I'd better be here to show my support," Mr O'Connor said
"I take my hat off to Daryl. He's a braver man than me.
"I hope he's got his insurance sorted because the locals aren't going to be impressed."
Although not everyone in the street or the state will love the new blue house, neighbour and Queensland supporter Jake Beattie said it was a bit of fun.
"It doesn't bother me," he said.
"I think it's cool.
"I just wonder if he's going to leave it blue after the series."
Win, lose or draw, Mr Hillard said the house would be repainted a more neutral colour once the Origin series ended.
Online bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au came to the party and helped paint the house in what is surely an act of treason against the state, just in time for Origin 1 tonight.
Sportsbet.com.au's Christian Jantzen said, "NSW fans living in Queensland are sick and tired of being treated as second class citizens.
"We're helping Daryl and his family show their true colours but there's no need for the pest inspectors to turn up because cockroaches are definitely welcome at this blue house.
"If Daryl doesn't like the colour at the end of the series, Sportsbet will be happy to return it to its original colour - but we hope he loves it," Mr Jantzen said.
