Family has a surprise win
IT WASN'T until a telephone call from NAB Coffs Coast Cycle Challenge director Peter Wardman that Tim Parkes realised his daughter Emily had entered the family in this year's charity ride.
In doing so, the Parkes' were the lucky winners of the Early Bird entry prize - a $400 Visa cash card.
Emily, who is studying at Canberra University, regularly competes in national and international mountain bike and road cycling races. At the recent UCI Mountain Bike World Cup held in Cairns, she came ninth in the Under 23 Years Women's Cross Country race.
For the NAB Coffs Coast Cycle Challenge, Emily entered her dad Tim in the 100km ride, her mum Helen in the 60km ride and herself in the new C4 Hill Climb and the 100km ride the next day.
According to Emily, this will be great training for future races and a great day for cyclists to help Coffs Harbour City Rotary raise much-needed funds for charity.
As to who gets to keep the $400 early bird prize, it seems that mum's the word.
Event director Peter Wardman is excited that this year's event will be bigger and better than previous years.
"So far, entries are over 70% higher compared with the same time last year," he said.
