Family business booms among struggle street

FOR more than seven decades, the Woodman family has supplied the region with much-needed equipment to build, maintain and reposition today's community.

Now, they've expanded even further, even throughout the local economy's toughest period.

Third generation co-owner Kerry Woodman launched the region's fifth Mitre 10 outlet in Marian over the weekend, after taking over the family business in 1977.

"I saw a great opportunity to follow what my parents and grandparents had started (76 years ago)," he said.

"We operated saw mills and then we got into hardware in the '50s and we've been with hardware ever since."

Forty years on and Mr Woodman hopes to offer his family's hardware service to the wider community.

He aims to supply members residing in Nebo through to Seaforth, instead of having them travel all the way into town.

He said the hardware store in Marian was a necessity, which wasn't being met by anyone else.

"We had this in planning for three years," he said. "We were (initially) involved in the early stages (with planning) Marian's Town Centre and that gave us the opportunity to be involved in Marian's retailing section."

"Mackay was always a strong area for us and I saw it as a great opportunity to get involved."

Now, residents will have access to over 16,000 needed products in the Marian Mitre 10 after residents were surveyed years ago.

"They definitely wanted to have a nursery to buy plants, fertilisers and chemicals for gardening," he said. "They also wanted to make sure we could fill gas bottles.

"We have trucks that travel out to Marian daily, so we can tailor to anybody's needs."

Mr Woodman said Marian's Mitre 10 would continue to adapt to the requirements of its customers.

"I've already added another 50 line items to our standard stock range, based on what people have asked us for," he said.
