#FakeTradie was real but ad still sucked

I WAS just as surprised as the next guy, but apparently that Rolex-sporting, fair-dinkum Aussie bloke on the Liberal Party's new ads was not a "fake tradie" after all.

You know the one. Clean-shirted construction worker enjoys a job-site coffee while telling us to "stick with the current mob for a while".

Whether it was his unsullied clothing, fancy watch or the fairly blatant reading of cue cards, it seemed no one bought the spiel of what seemed to be a counterfeit everyman.

But he was no fake.

After days of false identifications and conjecture about his limited acting prowess, the real Sydney steelworker behind the "voiced by A MacRae" tagline has finally surfaced.

The genuine article, welder Andrew MacRae from Lane Cove, even offered up his NSW contractor licence as evidence to reporters camped outside his home.

Apparently his friends found the whole hullabaloo "hilarious", but Mr MacRae was unable to discuss much more because he had signed a contract not to talk with the media.

So the whole thing was a crock. Just a beef-witted advertisement which, by the way, received a huge amount of free distribution.

But we can at least be happy that a voice actor of the same name, wrongly accused across the internet of being a no-good, money-grubbing fake, is now off the hook.

"Still got mates asking me to build their back decks, though," the wrong Andrew MacRae posted to Twitter yesterday.
