Explore ancient local landscapes

FILL the fuel tanks and follow the road less travelled with the Sherwood Four Wheel Drive Tour on July 30.

NPWS Discovery co-ordinator for the North Coast region, Andrew Turbill, said millions of years ago the area we now call home formed part of an ancient sea floor. “Going about our everyday lives most people are completely unaware that the remnants of this colourful age still shape our familiar landscape,” Mr Turbill said.

“This is one of the reasons why the NPWS Discovery team is offering you the exciting opportunity to get out of town for the day and explore the ancient sandstone environments of Sherwood Nature Reserve, located west of Woolgoolga.”

The day starts at Woolgoolga Creek with a short rainforest walk before driving higher and passing through huge old-growth forest made famous during the community anti-logging protests of the 1980s and '90s.

“Arriving on the high sandstone plateau above towering cliffs we stop for a delicious morning tea with unparalleled views over the Orara Valley,” Mr Turbill said

The cost of the Sherwood Explorer Tour is $65 per vehicle. All bookings and inquiries can be directed to the NPWS Coffs Coast Office (Monday-Friday) on 66520900.
