Endeavour of a lifetime
YOUNG Australians with an interest in sailing on the Young Endeavour are invited to apply for the experience of a lifetime.
Applications have opened for an 11-day voyage along the East Coast next year.
Crew members participate in all aspects of sailing a tall ship learning to set the sails, take the helm, navigate using the ship's charts and climb to the top of the 30-metre mast.
As the voyage draws to a close each crew member demonstrates their skills by taking command of Young Endeavour and setting a course along the Australian coast.
Amanda Brooker, 17, of Lennox Head sailed Young Endeavour from Brisbane to Gladstone in April this year.
Reflecting on her time aboard, Amanda said the journey of a 1000 miles must begin with a single step.
"By stepping aboard Young Endeavour you go on a journey to discover not only who you are, but what you have to offer," Amanda said.
Next year's voyage will depart from Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney, Eden, Newcastle, Brisbane, Gladstone, Airlie Beach and Mackay.
No prior sailing experience is required as crew members are supervised and supported by a Royal Australian Navy crew.
Youth crew are selected via an online ballot, which opens twice each year.
The ballot for voyages in the first half of 2013 will close on August 31.
