End of an era as bowls club looks for new lessee
IT'S the end of an era for the bowls club at 15 Lucy St, Cambooya - and hopefully a new beginning.
The Cambooya Ladies' Bowling Club is looking for another group, preferably a sporting organisation, to take over the lease of the clubhouse and grounds.
In recent years, their numbers have dwindled.
The men's bowling club packed up and left a decade ago, and the ladies currently only have 10 members on their books.
"Four of us are 84 and the rest are over 75, so we're sort of getting to that stage where we can't go on," club member Coral Richards explained.
"We're not broke but our money's not going to last long trying to keep up (with the rent) - so we just sort of think that the time has come."
John Troy from Elders Real Estate Toowoomba has come on board to help the ladies find someone to take over their lease, which costs them $800 a month.
The Lucy St address had been the site of the Cambooya Bowling Club for more than 80 years, Mrs Richards said.
Having had "a good 40 years" involvement with the club, Mrs Richards said it was sad it had come to this.
"In the meantime, we're keeping on our social things - we do hoy and friendship days and musical days - we're keeping on with those until we can finally get someone to take over," she said.
