Emus, Wheatmen scoop up lower grade honours
THE Dalby Wheatmen and Goondiwindi Emus split this year's Downs Rugby lower-grade premiership honours.
Dalby upset minor-premiers Chinchilla in C grade with Goondiwindi outlasting Dalby in B grade.
B GRADE: Goondiwindi has taken out the Downs Rugby B-grade premiership with a tight grand-final win over Dalby at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
The Emus took home the Bill Flamsteed Trophy after toughing out an 18-14 victory.
Goondiwindi led 10-6 at the break after a late first-half try to hooker Ben Dillon who also crossed for his team's second try in the second session which proved to be the match winner.
Goondiwindi's Jack Pearlman was named the grand final player of the match.
C GRADE: Dalby spoilt the 2018 season party for the Chinchilla River Rats when they upset the minor premiers in the C-grade decider.
The Wheatmen clinched the ES "Dooney” Hayes Memorial with an 18-15 victory after leading 15-5 at half-time.
The River Rats levelled the score at 15-all with around 10 minutes of play remaining, but a late penalty goal to Dalby halfback Sam Dean consigned Chinchilla to its third successive grand-final loss.
Dalby lock Craig McVeigh was named player of the grand final.
