Emma gives Coast locals medal thrill

CONGRATULATIONS to Woolgoolga girl Emma Moffatt for her great bronze medal-winning effort in yesterday's triathlon at Beijing.

Emma went into the race as a strong contender but by no means a favourite and raced bravely and smartly to finish not too far behind the winner, countrywoman Emma Snowsill.

It was a terrific performance that marks Emma as one of the Coffs Coast's most successful sporting products.

She would have had plenty of locals cheering her on during the lunchtime race yesterday.

Members of the local triathlon community, as well as those who competed with and against Emma in athletics and surf life saving over the years would have taken a particularly keen interest.

It would also have been a happy day at Woolgoolga High, where students and staff had been supporting Emma's Olympic campaign.

Hopefully the race will have inspired some talented young local sports people who may reach the Olympics themselves one day.

It is a long way from pounding the streets of Woopi to the medal dais in Beijing but young Emma has proven that with plenty of determination dreams can come true.
