Electric car technology ready and price is right

THE ELECTRIC car has been talked about for ages but fans say it's time has finally come.

Engineer and electric vehicle expert Dr Andrew Simpson, whose career has included stints at Tesla and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory, says the EV is at a "tipping point".

"It does stack up financially now," he said.

"The technology is ready and it's the right price.

"There's no barrier right now to lots more people in the Northern Rivers driving cars like this."

Brisbane-based company Tritium, which manufactures fast-charging stations for electric vehicles, plans to roll out a network of charging stations across the region to cater for the anticipated demand.

"We'd like to connect the Northern Rivers to Brisbane ," Tritium's Marcelo Salgado said.

"It's about having the facility to ensure people have 'range-confidence'."

Dr Simpson drove his EV to Cabarita from Brisbane to be at the North Coast Energy Forum yesterday.

He said charging stations along the North Coast would be a good fit for the region and attract the eco-tourist market.

"Between Byron and Noosa is very much close to big continuous urban strip; people move interchangeably throughout that region and the people that drive electric cars are going to want to be able to charge along the way."

The ideal buyers of the charging stations, estimated to cost between $30,000 and $50,000, are businesses who want people to stop and shop en route to their destination.

Charging stations are usually placed near the highway but also places where people want to relax for 30 minutes for the duration of the recharge, like cafes or shopping centres.
