Elderly man in serious condition after highway crash

One patient has been airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. 

INITIAL:

AN ELDERLY man is in a serious condition after a traffic crash on the Cunningham Highway near Wheatvale.

Emergency services responded to the call-out about 11.30am, after a red SUV collided with a black Toyota.

Queensland Ambulance Services reported the man was in a serious but stable condition while his wife was in a stable condition following the crash two-vehicle crash.

Both the man and woman are aged in their 70s and were travelling in the SUV at the time of the crash.

A rescue helicopter was called to assist paramedics with transporting one of the patients to hospital.

According to a QFES spokesperson, one of the people was trapped inside the vehicle for a period of time.

The man driving the Toyota was uninjured.

Roads around the area were closed for over an hour but are now open.
