Effort to rehome greyhounds
AS THE move to dissolve the greyhound racing industry across the state continues, one organisation is helping to rehome suitable greyhounds.
The Greyhounds As Pets program has so far provided 128 greyhounds a new home, including some of the Coffs Coast.
GAP says its primary goal is to provide as many dogs as possible with homes in the lead up to and beyond the closure of greyhound racing in NSW next year.
A Greyhounds As Pets spokesman said greyhounds can make great pets.
"They do not require huge amounts of exercise, tend to be quiet and sleep for big portions of the day," he said
The spokesperson did address concerns some may have about the nature of the dogs and if they are suitable as pets.
"Not all greyhounds have been raised in domestic environments with children and other animals," he said.
"So it is important that anyone adopting a greyhound is prepared to learn about the breed and how to make them feel secure in their new life.
GAP also offers a foster to adopt scheme which provides an opportunity for people to take greyhounds into their homes for a trial basis. GAP provides full support during this process to ensure that greyhounds are provided with the best possible home.
