Easy exercise to achieve your goals
HOW are you after the new year and Christmas festivities? Are you starting to think about what may happen this year or about goals you've actually set to achieve?
For me, this first week of the new year is about reflecting on the year gone and of other memories of other times that have popped up as we have engaged with visitors and friends.
The past three years have been amazing for me and 2016 was a powerful one. It started busily, with travel and new clients across the country, but was brought to a massive and sudden halt when I had another heart attack. Recovering from that set the tone for the remainder of the year when I released all anxiety and expectation and found myself being much more mindful about how I was engaging in the moment with people and situations in a heartfelt way.
So, on reflection, there was a startling realisation on how these things had manifested. A few years ago I had constructed a vision board that was covered in pictures and words that I had cut from a number of magazines. The montage created was my pictorial "wish list" of things to unfold in my life over the next three to five years. It was a lot of fun exploring all of the ideas that were possible. It took several hours and over a period of days the picture created itself.
The vision board covered all aspects of my life - personal, professional, financial, health, happiness, travel, adventure. Interestingly enough I hadn't thought about it for some time. The realisation was that in putting it together and thinking through what was possible and what was important to me in living a life with meaning, I had unconsciously created a powerful pathway that had directed my focus for that time - and by all accounts achieved it.
In fact, the areas that I had been vague on were the areas that delivered differently to what I had intended in creating the vision. An example was that I had put it out there that I wanted to have a great adventure. Well the story of the Attack on the Black Cat Track is now a book that details the appalling murder and brutal treatment of porters and injury to our small trekking group in PNG three years ago.
So here's the thing. It's easy and it's fun. Build a powerful positive picture of the future you want, put it out there by creating a vision board finding pictures, words and drawings that you stick on a piece of paper that you then have in sight and that provide the unconscious reminders of what you want to achieve.
The other thing to remember is the basic rules - no harm to self, no harm to others and no harm to the planet. Enjoy the adventure and all the best.
