HYUNDAI has offered a sneak preview of its upcoming cut-price coupe ahead of the car's official unveiling at next week's Detroit motor show.

The car, dubbed the Veloster but codenamed FS, is likely to go on sale in Australia within 18 months, but Hyundai's Australian spokesman Ben Hershmann told Drive this week there is no more news on the car's arrival Down Under.

The Veloster will carry a quirky door layout which features a single driver's side door and two passenger-side doors, allowing for easy kerbside entry and exit for rear-seat passengers by eliminating the need for the driver to move their seat – similar to Mini's Clubman wagon.

But Hyundai's version, unlike Mini, is likely to be offered in two separate body-styles dependent on whether the car is left or right-hand drive.

The Veloster is likely to be powered by a choice of two 1.6-litre engines, including a 103kW/167Nm direct injection version which will be teamed to a six-speed manual.

A less powerful 97kW/159Nm version is likely to be teamed to Hyundai's first dual-clutch self-shifter, which is expected to offer increases in fuel economy of up to 6% over a manual 'box.
