Duo rapt to dance for nation

LOCAL dancefloor dynamos David and Irena Brooks have returned from representing Australia at the Senior II World Dancesport Championships.

They didn't win but they made the most of their opportunities in Vancouver.

David and Irena placed third in the Senior III World Dancesport Federation Open Ballroom Championship which was held in the run up to the world titles.

In the main event, and amid competition from national representative couples from Italy, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Estonia, the USA, Canada, Netherlands, Austria, France, Chinese Taipei and England, they finished a more than creditable 33rd.

"The privilege to represent your country at a world championship is an unbelievable feeling," David said.

"Walking out on to the dance floor in the parade of countries under the Australian flag is something else," he said.

For Irena it was a similarly memorable time.

"The experience of dancing at an international championship amongst the elite was at times overwhelming, but at the same time wonderful," she said.

"The standard was exceptional and it certainly was a fabulous learning curve.

"I look forward to repeating this process sooner rather than later.

"We made some exceptional friends at this meet."
