Dunn eyes Millions for Group level push
MURWILLUMBAH horse trainer Matthew Dunn will target October's Magic Millions sales in a bid to continue building towards Group One level.
In a year where Dunn has won the NRRA Trainers award, the Murwillumbah racecourse based trainer is eyeing the top level, with Australia's richest race day and yearling sales his main focus.
"We'll target the Magic Millions this year with a lot of horses because it's so close and worth so much money,” Dunn said.
"It's the best carnival we can go to as far as location goes and it's the best prize money carnival too.”
Dunn said introducing high quality horses into his stables through the sales was key to competing at the top level.
"We just need to try to keep competing at the top level so we're focussed more than ever on the Magic Millions. That's the key,” he said.
Dunn is coming off what he calls the best year of his training career and celebrated his first Group-listed race win this year to go with around 96 winners for the season.
"It's probably been our best year and we've been competitive at Group level over the carnival in Brisbane,” Dunn said.
"Week to week winners are still good and the next level has probably been better than ever before.”
Training with wife Keira, Dunn is looking to expand his stables into Brisbane and has just been nominated for the NSW Racing Country Trainer of the Year.
Dunn said he was honoured to be nominated for the award, which is decided in Sydney on September 30.
"When you look at the guys involved, they're trainers with massive experience,” Dunn said.
"It's a privilege and honour to be mentioned in the same sentence as those sorts of people.”
