Duke and Duchess to get royal treatment at Amberley

EXCITEMENT is building at the RAAF Base Amberley in anticipation of the approaching arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The Royal couple are due to arrive at the airforce base by aircraft at 11am.

They will be greeted by a ceremonial stair guard including the Minister for Defence Senator David Johnston and defence force chief General David Hurley.

A flypast will be conducted by pilots from No 6 Squadron in F/A-18F Super Hornets, which are based at Amberley.

Prince William and Catherine are then scheduled to tour Number 1 Squadron headquarters and meet Air Force personnel.

They will then experience a short flight in a F/A-18F simulator followed by a tree planting ceremony at the base's memorial garden.

The visit will culminate with the Duke and Duchess attending a short reception at the Officer's Mess with RAAF base Amberley personnel, veterans and their families.

The final event will give the royal couple a chance to meet four families of service personnel lost during recent conflicts.

During their time at Amberley the Duke and Duchess will be escorted by Senior Australian Defence Force Officer Air Commodore Tim Innes.

Air Commodore Innes said the visit was an extreme honour and privilege for whole base.

He said personnel and volunteers had taken to the visit with great enthusiasm and professionalism.

"We found out about the visit three months ago and since it was scheduled for Easter Saturday, I thought we'd have some problems getting volunteers," he said. "But that has been far from the case.

"There's been a real buzz around the base for their arrival.

Following their visit to Amberley, the Duke and Duchess will head to Brisbane to attend a reception in South Bank at 1.55pm.
