Driver killed in fiery smash

THE school holiday road safety campaign has had a grim start with a fatal smash south of Urunga.

A Toyota heading east on Hungry Head Road slammed into a tree and burst into flames about 200m east of the Pacific Highway on Saturday morning.

The driver, who was the sole occupant, died at the scene. The remains are yet to be positively identified.

Three men on a fishing trip discovered the smouldering wreck, and surrounding bushland alight, at 5am and raised the alarm.

Police, paramedics, firefighters and the SES attended the scene.

Police are continuing their investigations and are preparing a report for the coroner.

In other news, two people were taken to hospital after a head-on smash at Dorrigo on Friday night.

The accident involving a Mitsubishi Express van and a Hyundai happened on Maynards Plains Road.

Rescue crews had to free one trapped occupant with two broken legs from the Hyundai, while the van driver suffered a fractured collarbone.

Both were taken to Dorrigo Hospital and were later transferred to Coffs Harbour.
